December Fishing Report 2005

Winter is finally here and until the end of the month there will be some really big bass caught.  We have started catching good bass (6 to 9 pounds) on big spinnerbaits (1/2 ounce double willowleaf in the Shimmer color) off the edges of grassbeds and the edges of shallow creeks.  Anywhere from 5 to 10 foot deep.  We are fishing the baits very slow and almost on the bottom or just barely ticking the grass.  Sometimes a slow steady retrieve or a slow retrieve with just a little hesitation to make the blades flash more.

After this real cold weather passes and we start the next warm up, the jig bite will get really good and will last until the 2nd week in January or so.  The big numbers of bass are coming in 25 to 35 foot of water on the Johnson Custom Baits small (1/2 ounce) jigging spoons hopped off the bottom.  The Chrome and Chartreuse or Chrome and Blue are best on sunny days and the Gold can be awesome on cloudy days.  The Carolina Rig is also catching a lot of the small bass along with a Drop Shot Rig.  On the Carolina Rig we like using the French Fries or Centepedes in Watermelon tipped with Chartreuse or Pumpkin, and also the Zoom Finese worm in Lemon Pumpkin.  Also one of the good baits is the small Lake Fork Creature and the Baby Brush Hog used on the Carolina rig in Watermelon, and Black and Blue.  A long leader, 4 to 5 foot long seems to work the best.

The crappie and yellow bass or bar fish are coming in the deep water also.  And now is a good time to stock up on good eating filets.  We are ready to do some more fun crappie trips for the next 2 months.  We run a crappie and yellow bass special for December and January.  It is for 2 or 3 people for 8 hours and the cost is $250.00 a day.  Remember that from December 1st through the last day of February you must retain any size crappie that you catch until you fill your limit of 25 per person.

Spring will be here soon, so if you have a specific date in mind to catch that fish of a lifetime or just have some great fun, give us a call or email soon to hold that date.  It does not matter whether you are a pro or a novice at fishing, we are here to teach or help you in techniques and patterns of Lake Fork.

FORECAST FOR SPRING:
January can be good fishing between cold fronts.  There are usually some 70 degree days on the warmup days.
February is one of the best months for truly big bass!  You do have to fish hard because the bass move in and out and turn on and off during to day.  Usually this month produces some of the biggest bass of the year.
March:  Some bass are starting to spawn, but there are lots of bass shallow doing that famous prespawn feed.  Great Rattletrap, Spinnerbait, and Jerkbait fishing!

Give us a call.  We wish you great fishing and great Holidays!

NOTE:  The fishing report was getting a little slow to load so we split each year into it's own page.  The fish usually do the same things year after year so we thought the '97,'98, '99, 00 & '01 info would be good to refer back to.
